In the southern part of the prefecture of the Rethymno region, on the Libyan Sea, to the centre of the Gialia area and beside the ruins of the Minoan city of Lamon, some fishermen built a small settlement. Plakias was so named because it is a continuation of an immersed plate in the middle of the southern coast of Crete.
Plakias is situated 35 km from Rethymno, 110 km from Heraklion and 90 km from Chania.

Nearby is the Holy Monastery of Preveli, which, due to its isolated and deserted location, played an important role in the Cretan Resistance during World War II.
On the slopes of the mountains are scattered picturesque villages: Mirthios, Selia, Rodakino, Mariou, Asomatos, Lefkogia, Gianniou.

Preveli Gorge where Megalos Potamos (Great River) crosses through a forest of palm trees and flows into a beautiful beach.
Kourtaliotis Gorge with beautiful waterfalls coming from the bowels of the earth throughout the year.
Kotsifos Gorge, a passage to other traditional villages such as: Kali Sikia, Agios Yiannis, Agouseliana.
The area offers attractive walks or bicycle rides to nearby villages, through olive groves.
